happy 2025!

Holidays in San Francisco

Happy New Year! I had a week off filled with eating, family, fun, and--did I say eating? December was chock full of so many acitivites that it felt like it was about 6 days long.

Now it's the new year; it's the time of year when people feel fresh, new, and invigorated. There's something so wonderfully exhilarating about a whole, blank year in front of you. To fill with what you wish. We've chatted about new year's resolutions in the studio and I said that the last time I made a new year's resolution was in 2010. Some of you have heard this story and for some it will be new. So here goes.

I'm the child of Indian immigrants. What this means--for those of you who don't have a ton of Indian immigrant friends--is that fitness/sports were not emphasized in our family. Just academics and grades. I have a WHOLE anecdote from my childhood on this one, but I'll save that for a later blogpost. So I wasn't raised with a huge fitness background; but, we did love our Ayurvedic walks after dinner :-)

Once I was in college, I began to hit the gym. I began walking on the treadmill, the elliptical, and lifting weights. A few years later, I added the Cindy Crawford workout video (on VHS) into my routine and I did it religiously every morning (where are my fellow Cindy Crawford peeps?). I loved weight-lifting so much that I settled into a 6 days a week, 2 hours a day body builder's regimen. This was my go-to before the kids were born. Once the kids came around, all my fitness routines fell to the wayside.

Then came January 2010. I was a little chubbier, after 4 kids, and a little older, but I was so ready to work on myself and get healthy again. I joined Downtown Petaluma's 24 Hour Fitness and was ready to hit the weights and get back into my routine. You guys, I went into that weight room, started lifting, and....I HATED IT. I couldn't believe it. What was I going to do? I didn't have a plan B because this was my thing. But, unbelievably, it wasn't my thing any more and I had to find something new.

I decided to try all the classes at 24 Hour--kickboxing, step, spin, yoga, everything. I stepped on that yoga mat for the first time and I was transported. I LOVED it. I had found my thing! I went to so many classes they were definitely losing money on me! I got healthy (mind, body, spirit). I stuck with it and created a life and vocation out of my love of yoga. Blue Door is here because of January 2010.

That was my last new year's resolution because there is no way that I'm ever going to top it! Thus, I don't make new year's resolutions any more. I create daily mantras/intentions: make someone smile by complimenting them. Move a little more today. Get a better night's sleep. Declutter one area of the house. Try something new. This is how I greet every day and it works for me.

Let me know if you have a new year's resolution or mantra. I love hearing what others are creating!

Xx
