I’m not just the owner, I’m also a client! Upon reading that line, you learn three things about me:

  1. I’m cheesy (but I think we already established that when I laugh at my own jokes, no?).
  2. I’m old (if you don’t know where this is from, Google it).
  3. I practice what I preach.

When new students come into the studio (or an existing student who’s having difficulty making it back into the studio), what do I say? You need to do yoga AT LEAST 3x a week, ideally, EVERY DAY. Why at least 3x a week? This is how you keep making forward progress in your practice. Instead of 1 step forward and 2 steps back (which is what would happen if you came less often), you make 2 steps forward, 1 step back. But, ideally, you practice every day. You eat every day, yes? You sleep every day, yes? So, why wouldn’t you take care of yourself every day?

Yoga isn’t always coming into the studio and stepping on your mat (although for me, that is MAGIC!). Yoga is the quiet, deliberate routine in the morning before you jump into the craziness of the day. Yoga is the cup of tea (or coffee) enjoyed while doing nothing else. Yoga is the mindful walk after the first rain enjoying the clean, fresh smells. Yoga is spending time with your family and being fully present. Yoga is scraping your tongue every morning when you wake up. Yoga is scheduling 1 hour into your day to do WHATEVER THE F*** YOU WANT. Yoga is taking care of yourself, because, let’s be honest, if you don’t take care of yourself, who will?

This is the busiest time of the year and it’s so easy to make excuses as to why we’re too busy to make time for ourselves. But, once we stop the glorification of busy-ness and realize that making time for what is really important actually makes us happier, free-er, more sane, it gets pretty, darn easy.
